The recording was captured on March 19, 1968 at Le Hibou Coffee House in Ottawa, Ontario during a two week residency by Mitchell ahead of the release of her debut album, Song To A Seagull, which came out just four days later.  Earlier the same evening, Jimi Hendrix had performed at the Capitol Theater, just over a kilometre away. The guitarist had spoken to Mitchell and noted his plans to record her performance in his diary, writing Talked with Joni Mitchell on the phone.
