Prince George Free Press » Plan would convert landfill gas to into cash

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has approved, in principle, a plan to turn trash to treasure. On Thursday the district board of directors approved in principal an agreement to sell the carbon offset rights from the Foothills Regional Landfill gas collection system to the Green Municipal Corporation. District administrator Jim Martin said the agreement, if approved, would generate $525,000 for the district up front with potential long-term income coming from the sale of the offsets. “As we close out new areas of the landfill, we will expand the gas collection system. This is new revenue to help cover those costs,” Martin said. “(And) the agreement does not preclude the beneficial use of the gas.”
