Flooding on the Nechako River has entered its 25th day. Contractors and city crews continue to combat unpredictable high water conditions in low-lying areas along River Road and North Nechako Road, according to reports by the city As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the ice jam was about five kilometres long – nearly half its peak length of 9.5 km on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, ice began to break up, causing sudden, localized flooding. “In one location near the Foothills Bridge the water suddenly rose three to five feet and in less than 25 minutes, had dropped four feet,” a city report said. “Similar conditions occurred later in the day [Jan. 1] in areas further downstream.”
