Free ferry services for foot passengers for two weeks

GEORGE TOWN: Foot passengers wishing to cross the Penang Strait can do so for free from Jan 1 to 14 next year under a two-week free trial as the Federal Government introduced new vessels to replace the Penang ferries. Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) said the free services will be given based on the advice of Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. It also said that starting Jan 1, PPSB will continue providing services to carry motorcycles and bicycles across the channel using the remaining old ferry owned by Prasarana Malaysia. Meanwhile, Dr Wee said on Facebook that the 126-year-old ferry service is the oldest in the country, as the first cross-strait ferry service between Penang Island and the mainland, which began in 1894.
