Each year Grand Strand visitors and residents throw away 70,000 tons of food. The Horry County Solid Waste Authority, which operates the landfill, is conducting a limited pilot program to gauge public interest in food scrap recycling.
On Tuesday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced it would offer nearly $5 million in grants to cities and towns to help set up food scrap recycling programs.
DEC and Feeding New York State, the state association of New York’s 10 Feeding America member food banks, today announced that a total of one million pounds of food was donated to hungry New Yorkers as part of the ongoing implementation of the State’s Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law.
