Smith-Palmer House on Franklin Street sells to local church for $1M

An 1850s-era townhouse on a visible street corner in Monroe Ward is now in the hands of a local church after a seven-figure deal.
Remnant Church purchased the Smith-Palmer House at 211 W. Franklin St., where it plans to house offices for Grimké Seminary, its pastor training arm.
The church, which has locations in Shockoe Bottom and on Arthur Ashe Boulevard, paid $1.15 million for the three-story, 5,700-square-foot building. It previously housed offices for Sandpiper Hospitality, a hotel group now based in Henrico’s Glen Forest Office Park.
In business notes, a new store is opening at Merchant Square; Bid ‘n Buy Auction and Spring Car Raffle for Child Development Resource Center will go on this year; Marco’s Pizza to open in Yorktown; and a booming market for homes sales in the area.
Broker and owner, John Martin, said in a statement from an email, “I have been selling for over 2 decades in this market and have watched James City County grow into what it is today, from the start of New Town to the development of Governor’s Land, Powhatan or Ford’s Colony. Although change and growth have taken place across the footprint, the same hometown feel exists.”
The space was formally occupied by Williamsburg at Home, a furniture store featuring furnishing inspired by Colonial Williamsburg.
The soon-to-be demised space will feature a prominent, street-level storefront within a signature building in the midst of Merchants Square, according to a news release from Cushman & Wakefield, Thalhimer.

WestRock chairman John Luke’s former riverfront home wasn’t the only Goochland County estate to sell for seven-figures last month.
Luke’s $2.82 million sale of the Oaklea estate at 330 Flag Station Road led the pack of area residential sales in January. The transaction closed Jan. 27 and included the 6,700-square-foot main house and 32 of the nearly 35 acres that were listed for sale last August.
Anne Chewning with The Steele Group | Sotheby’s International Realty had the listing, representing Luke and his wife Kathleen. Luke is non-executive chairman of packaging company WestRock and was CEO of its Richmond-based predecessor MeadWestvaco.
