LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - It’s been almost eight months since Hurricane Laura damaged thousands of buildings including the libraries in Calcasieu Parish.
Two months after Laura, ten out of the 13 branches across Calcasieu Parish were able to open. Now, all have reopened to the public, but work still continues for the three hardest-hit branches.
”As we all know, it’s been a crazy year. At least the past 8 months have been just crazy,” said Calcasieu Library Public Information Officer Christy Comeaux.

Residents in Lake Charles and Vinton will soon see the return of regular library services thanks to a $20,000 donation from the American Library Associationâs Disaster Relief Fund. The donation is allocated to purchase portable buildings for the Epps Memorial Library, Moss Bluff Library and Fontenot Memorial Library â each of which sustained significant damage from Hurricanes Laura and Delta that rendered them uninhabitable. Â
âWe had trees and branches fall on the roofs so thereâs definitely roof damage on all of those,â Margie Harrison, library director, said. âWeâve got big issues with themâ¦Weâre not sure exactly how long they wonât be open but weâre saying at least six months.â
