Joseph Saidu Momoh was born on January 26, 1937, in Binkolo, Bombali District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. He began his military career in 1958 with the Royal West African Frontier Force 9RWAFF) as a private. After further training in Ghana and the United Kingdom, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Sierra Leone Military Forces in 1963.
He was elevated to the rank of major and given command at Moa Barracks, Kailahun.
In 1969, Momoh became a lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of the First Battalion. A year later, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

MONROVIA Finally, this month a trial over war crimes will start on Liberian soil. It’s been 18 years since the end of the Liberian civil war and nine years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommended the country hold a war crimes court to bring those accused of directing the atrocities that left 250,000 dead to justice.

The telephone conversation at a safe house in Danane, Ivory Coast with Corporal Foday Sankoh was to become the foundation upon which Omrie Golley’s role in the peace process was built. It was through that safe house bush radio conversation that Golley was able to detect an uncanny desire for international recognition and acceptance from the RUF leader.
The formation of an external delegation by the RUF was no small measure an attempt to establish diplomatic contact with the outside world and it had become obvious that the RUF leadership wanted to be taken seriously.
The Inside Story
“It is finished” were the words of Jesus Christ when he noticed that death was imminent on the cross and the fulfillment of the scripture must be accomplished, he therefore gave himself up for the benefit of mankind. One day, not too long from now the voters of this country would witness a declaration from a political candidate when he too would notice that political success has taken a marathon journey from him. He would say “It is finished”, meaning that all efforts he made to become the next president of Sierra Leone has landed him in a state of political disappointment.
