choice that you are basically faced at the ballot. one of those parties has shown itself to have lost faith in democracy in such a way that you have to vote for democrats to preserve it and people say, well that s not really a choice. what do you say to them? first of all chris, i want to be clear. i m not gonna advocate for one part of the other standing on the white house. that s not what president biden said last night. he made it clear. there are democrats and republicans who do believe in elections, who do believe in democracy. but he pointed out there is a faction in the republican party, maga republicans who have taken a position that they perpetuate the big lie, that they do not support democratic values. that they have been out there
like the chicago political machine, which entrenched one party, democratic, during four decades during the 20th century. and i was a fashion of corruption. couldn t couldn t throw the bums in chicago. perhaps the most famous example, the one that is the most terrifying, the most brutal, which is the one party authoritarian rule the dominant dominated the american south from reconstruction up until the american voting acts in the 60s. corrupt, predatory and violent. and you know what? couldn t throw the bums out. one party rule transparent antithetical to the basic type of democracy. but it s very much still a threat today. now you see the democrats currently control the white house in both the congress in the senate. but if you throw them up, which a lot of people want to do, the
on the faces of the cops on the steps of the capital and they were getting their heads bashed in. that faction wants to wield the power of the state to insulate themselves from free and fair elections and in this state one party rule. whether to gerrymandering, or party suppression. don t certify elections that don t go their way. and so when democrats say you don t have a choice in this election. there s only one party that cares about democracy it s us. democracies on the ballot. what they are really saying is, if you don t elect us this time, if you don t keep them out of power, you may never be able to elect us again. or in short, folk to preserve your right to throw the bums out. joining me now, someone who understands the stakes of today s election very well. ron klain, white house chief of staff under president biden. ron, i want to start with the paradox. telling voters look we ve, got a two party system, that s the
affiliated with qanon and these other extreme groups. so i don t think it s true and it s definitely not the presidents view, that every american has to vote democratic if they stand for democracy. but they do, and the presidents view is, that americans should stand up and speak out and again i can t advocate election results here, but they should make it clear that they want this not to be the last election in america. and they want to have demand a chronic officials running our elections and making sure the candidates with the most votes are the ones that win. you re standing on the white house lawn, you referred to the hatch act which is the frontal law which prevents people in your position from using their time in their official capacity to campaign. it was routinely flooded in the previous administrations, their official finding spice various bodies that it had been floated. why does it matter? why are you being careful on why does it matter? look i think we try to obey
all branches of government, and you don t like the way the government is going, the fire them, or if i or someone. now let s be clear. it does not always lead to the i think that 2010 election was a disaster. it made the country worse. it assured in austerity and terrible anti democratic gerrymandering. now that mechanism does not always prescribe blame to the right people at all. but it s kind of what we ve got. it s the basic mechanism of feedback. it s the way the system or less functions. it s what democracy means. and the problems arise when you can t throw the bums out. that s when things start to get corrupt, predatory. you see this in political machines. sometimes they re in small towns, sometimes big cities,
