See how Portland s community gardens are growing this spring

See how Portland’s community gardens are growing this spring Updated 9:55 AM; By Aliya Hall | For The Oregonian/OregonLive Community gardens have been an integral part of Portland neighborhoods since they were first established in 1975. The city has 57 community gardens that are developed and operated by neighborhood volunteers and the Portland Parks and Recreation staff. Since the coronavirus quarantine renewed people’s interest in gardening, community gardens have been more popular than ever. In early April, the parks department’s community gardens wait list grew to more than 2,000 entries from 1,340 people, all hoping for one of the 2,544 community garden plots in the program, said Laura Niemi, program coordinator. Plots are assigned through June as they become available, but Niemi said she doesn’t expect to see much turnover this year.
