“With warm fanfare, we made the 41-hour cruise from Lake Union in Seattle to our home — Astoria,” Floyd Holcom, owner of Pier 39, announced recently on his Facebook page.
The state has ordered developer Floyd Holcom, the owner of Pier 39, to restore wetlands he improperly filled near the Cannery Loft Condominiums.
Holcom began clearing a plot of land he owns between the condominiums and a branch of the Astoria Riverwalk curving around Alderbrook Slough. He built a gravel connector path from a cul-de-sac at the end of Abbey Lane to the trail.
Nathan Crater, the city engineer, said the path blocked stormwater drainage from adjacent warehouses to the south of Holcomâs property to wetlands adjoining the slough. During heavy rains Monday, water pooled on either side of the path.
Lisa Morley, a behavioral workplace safety consultant, has conceded in the close race for Ward 4 on the Astoria City Council to Tom Hilton, the owner of Hanthorn Crab Co.
Morley, who was behind by one vote after a hand recount, had the option of challenging the results through a petition in Circuit Court. She sought information on the process but ultimately decided not to challenge by the deadline.
âI would like to congratulate Tom Hilton on his win,â Morley said in a statement Tuesday. âI am very proud of the campaign we ran, and Iâm especially excited by the high voter turnout. I hope that will be the legacy of 2020 in elections, that we all continue to get out and vote for every single election.
