Wonders of Italy: The Basilica of St Francis in Assisi

English One of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy, the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is also a Unesco World Heritage site, welcoming visitors as a distinctive landmark as they approach the Umbrian town, birthplace of Francis. The basilica of Saint Francis was built starting from 1228, just two years after Francis’ death, as a place destined to guard the saint’s remains. The first stone was placed by Pope Gregory IX on 17 July 1228, the day after the canonization of Francis. According to tradition, Francis himself, as he was nearing his death, indicated that location to his Franciscan brothers as the place for his burial.

Readers Album - Kaya - Fethiye Times

Feature photo above: Panorama of a verdant springtime Kaya valley taken from the Fethiye road. Jan and I had the great pleasure of living in the Kaya valley for some of 2019 and found it a beautiful and fascinating place. The valley is actually closer to the centre of Fethiye than the further reaches of Çalış or Karaçulha and yet, because of the intervening hills, feels like another world, the pace of life notably slower and more peaceful when compared with the bustle of Fethiye. Best accessed by the road rising up behind the Crusader castle, a very pleasant fifteen minute drive through the forests will bring you down into the valley, although I’m the first to admit the journey is enlivened by a respectable number of proper full-on hairpin bends. It’s not often you’re required to turn the steering wheel to full lock in order to get around a bend, especially on the descent!

Remembering the 1957 Earthquake

Remembering the 1957 Earthquake 1957 earthquake damage along Lake Merced Boulevard, March 22, 1957 - A little quake at 10:26 a.m., another one 21 minutes later, a third a minute after that, a little shock at 10:52, one at 11:04, another at 11:19, then quiet. Then just 26 minutes later, the Big One: A distant, awesome rumble that tightened throats with fear, The Chronicle said. The sound was followed in an instant by a twisting, jarring, side-rolling motion. The clock on San Francisco s Ferry Building stopped for the first time since the disaster of April 18, 1906. It was 11:45 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 1957. In an instant, merchandise littered the floor at the Emporium department store at the Stonestown shopping center and displays at grocery and liquor stores crashed to the floor. Nearly all the windows shattered at the brand-new library at San Francisco State College, out by Lake Merced.
