The American Bar Association notified Florida Coastal School of Law on May 18 that the school’s teach-out plan was rejected and must be resubmitted.
The ABA directed the law school to submit the plan to facilitate the transfer of its students to other accredited law schools to finish their education after Florida Coastal’s application for reinstatement in the federal Title IV student loan program was denied in April.
“We will be submitting an appeal of the Department of Education’s decision this week. We will be resubmitting the teach-out plan by May 28 with details on how the plan will work for each of our students,” said Peter Goplerud, president and dean of Florida Coastal, in an email May 19.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Coastal School of Law on Friday said it’s disputing the findings by the Department of Education (ED) in a letter that denied the school’s reinstatement in the Title IV Student Loan program.
In a news release, the school said it believes the ED made an error and that it will be appealing the decision. It has 10 days to submit its appeal to the ED.
“I was perplexed by the ED’s decisions and disagree on many points they made in the letter and press release,” Peter Goplerud, president and dean of FCSL, said in a prepared statement. “We are putting together the factual evidence of the successes of our graduates and will be going point by point to refute the ED’s claims.”
The office of Federal Student Aid in the U.S. Department of Education notified Florida Coastal School of Law on May 13 that the school’s application for reinstatement to participate in federal student aid programs is denied.
Without access to federal student aid programs, the law school will close.
“We are currently reviewing the letter with counsel and looking at our options. We have been given 10 days to appeal the DOE decision. We submitted a teach-out plan to the ABA last week and have been in preliminary contact with them concerning this denial and we will be speaking with them further,” said Florida Coastal President and Dean Peter Goplerud in an email.
