Paradise Bleeding by Germany’s
Sabine Ehrl, a project which offers a brave message about the society the filmmaker grew up in, bringing a level of energy and soul which can even be felt in these early stages of the project. Written by the director herself, the story plunges the viewer into a small fictitious town in Bavaria at Christmas time in the early 1990s. Formed of interwoven episodes following several different families, the film is an epic drama inspired by Catholicism and exploring desire, guilt, fear, trauma and murder. Whilst the supposedly beautiful, capitalist and Catholic surface remains the same, we see a love triangle end in an outburst of violence, teenage kids unexpectedly becoming parents and a broken woman suffering from the expectations laid at her door as a wife and mother…
