A few thoughts on the psychology of aging | News, Sports, Jobs

Guiding the train of your life safely along the track | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. A couple of weeks ago, I talked about April showers and the fact that everyone’s life gets rained upon once in a while. Today, I want to turn our attention to May flowers; the promised result of that rain. We have all heard the many sayings that have developed over the years as a way of encouraging us to take heart when life hands us an unexpected curve. Probably the most well known one is, “When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.” My husband’s grandmother, a gem of a woman who came to this country from Luxembourg when she was 13 years old, gave me some sage advice when my husband and I were first married. She wisely counseled: “Life is a series of peaks and valleys. When you find yourself in a valley, take heart and know that a peak is on its way.”

A few thoughts on building memories | News, Sports, Jobs

Suzanne Killian NIAGARA, Wis. As I age, I find myself intrigued with how our minds work in regard to forming memories. Why is it that I can remember so many events and people from my childhood so vividly, and yet cannot remember a detail from last week? And I now lose my train of thought so easily. If my husband does not let me finish a sentence or tell him something until he is done with his thought, mine has left my brain like Elvis leaving the building and is lost for at least an hour. Neither one of us is ever far from a pen and scratch pad. I leave myself much better written reminders; they are complete thoughts and are detailed enough to be of future use. I cannot tell you how often I find notes in my husband’s handwriting that are simply a phone number, or a date or a time and nothing else. Sometimes it is enough for him to remember the rest, but we certainly cannot depend upon that being the case!

Life – only time will tell what comes next | News, Sports, Jobs

Suzanne Killian NIAGARA, Wis. There were two instances in just this past week where I was reminded that my husband and I are definitely on the downward slope of our lives. We had been talking about how we wanted to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. I had always wanted to see Montana something about its nickname “Big Sky Country” has always intrigued me. I had heard about Whitefish from a friend with whom I used to work so, after reviewing their website, I ordered a guide from their visitor’s bureau. As we were perusing its pages, my husband made the comment, “I wish we could have afforded to travel like this when we were younger.” He was, of course, noticing all of the outdoor recreational activities that involved hiking some pretty rugged terrain, rock climbing and whitewater rafting. We did our fair share of all those things across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula when we were younger, but our aging bodies cannot take that kind of wear and tear now. Not actually
