During a special meeting Thursday, city council discussed the possibility of the construction of a new facility to house the city’s law enforcement agency. WEIRTON A proposal discussed by Weirton Council Thursday night could eventually see the city’s police department relocated into a new facility. Legislation will be put forward for consideration, first by the city’s Finance Committee during its meeting next week, and then by the full council during its meeting March 8, to expend up to $50,000 on an engineering study for the proposed new headquarters for the Weirton Police Department.

During the meeting, it was proposed the city offer a 10 percent, across-the-board discount on its business and occupation tax for the remainder of the current fiscal year as a COVID relief program. During a special meeting Thursday to discuss the 2021-22 fiscal budget, members of Weirton Council proposed an ordinance which would provide an across-the-board, 10 percent discount on the B&O tax for the final two quarters of the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

Council voted unanimously on a resolution to authorize financial support in the amount of $33,062.50 to the BDC, which is involved in economic development activities in Hancock and Brooke counties. The resolution originally was presented to council in January but was tabled to allow for further discussion after some council members expressed concerns. Prior to the vote, Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh requested additional information from BDC Executive Director Marvin Six, who was in attendance. “There’s two things that stick in my head,” Marsh said, asking about a budgetary item presented by the BDC showing employee salaries and also a rate chart which had been presented to council.

Weirton council stops water board expansion proposal | News, Sports, Jobs

chowell@weirtondailytimes.com WEIRTON – A proposal which would have expanded the membership of the Weirton Area Water Board was halted after members of City Council expressed confusion over how and why the ordinance was developed. Weirton Council met in special session Thursday, presented with an ordinance which would have amended provisions of Article 161 of the Ordinances of the City of Weirton. That section of code is focused on the membership and terms of members of the water board. The ordinance, which had been recommended by the water board 5-0 during its meeting earlier this month, would have expanded the board from its current five voting members to seven.
