there were problems as you said toyota acknowledged. i think part of at the time what was scaring people is nobody could really figure out or pinpoin what the problem was. there was some talk back in this past january, toyota did inform the highway traffic safety administration that they had certain gas pedals that could have had a sticking defect. on top of that as you mentioned the floor mat issue and then a question whether this was an electronic flaw. put that together and the 9 million were recalled. they weren t recalled over an electronic flaw. they said there are cases we can t explain. it has to be something we can t see that leads people to say maybe it s an electronics flaw. toyota has been testing for this and something the government and academy of sciences and nasa are looking into that but there s never been any kind of real evidence there is an electronics flaw. it s one of the things where people say we can t think of anything else, maybe it s the
genuinely in peril here, in this tape and you know, it raises a lot of question, congressman, about the floor mat issue and he was pulling on the accelerator, trying to release it, and the officer on the scene said there appeared to be no issue with a mat involved. and, does this tell us there is some kind of, you know, computer systems issue in this car as well? the one thing about a smoking gun, is that nhtsa, toyota and people from our committee, we are sending out there, are going to have a vehicle that, if it can be duplicated we can get to the bottom of it, one of the important things, that i think we should all remember, is these vehicles have been out there, for many, many years, and that is how end up with 8 million affected vehicles, and what we are looking for, is out of this rash of new runaway vehicles how many of them are real, versus, perhaps, have the same effect, that often happens when a big event happens and people want to be part of it, we are not taking
and that s what s particularly concerning overall about these latest reports. for the san diego incident, there are questions about whether or not this was a floor mat issue. we understand from the 911 call that he was trying to pull up the accelerator, as well it looked like or sounded like he had checked about the floor mat but we don t know until the investigation is done for finally what happened with the car. as far as the new york incident, this is a 2005 prius, according to reports, again, the woman that owns this car had already brought it to a dealer to get it fixed and so one would assume, again, only assumptions at this point, hair harris, that the car had a clean bill of health. we don t know until the investigation is done but one can assume that based on the fact they brought her car in. harris: these are customers but it might change things, too, if the dealer s car is involved in this and now one is. according to the office of congressman darrell issa, out of san
