April 14th 1865 was an incredible day for both the lincolns and for washington. News had reached the city that robert e. Lee had surrendered to grant. The war was finally coming to a conclusion. That morning Abraham Lincoln has breakfast with his family. Robert todd lincoln his eldest son, joins them for breakfast. He was at appomattox. He was part of ulysses s. Grants staff. And he was telling the story to the family about what had just taken place. The city has in celebration.
