The city of Cedar Rapids is looking to build an approximately $20 million horizontal collector well near Cargill’s corn milling facility as part of the city’s permanent flood control system one of the finishing touches of flood protection work on the east side.
The city of Cedar Rapids has finalized a $10 million deal to buy land from Rick and Marsha Stickle to build a flood control levee around Cedar Lake marking a key step to move forward with completion of the city’s network of flood protection.
The system is about 30 percent finished and includes a 13-foot flood wall that is lined with grassy terraces for events and visitor lounging. A floodgate is designed to open for vehicles to pass through.

The RAISE grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, would fund much of the approximately $50 million project to replace the Eighth Avenue bridge with a cable-stayed one that could stay open over the Cedar River during extreme flooding.
