Jennifer lets start tonight in flint, michigan. The city about an hour north of detroit. This is my map of michigan and its a place with a long list of dubious distinctions. It has the highest crime rate of any Michigan City the highest number of abandoned properties in the nation and last year it was the number one most violent city in the country. It also is one of the poorest cities. Compare that to michigan overall which is at 16 , the 14 is the national figure. It is a sad picture, even more so because of flints history as the center of the American Manufacturing industry. Its the birthplace of this countrys Labor Movement. In 1960 flint was michigans second largest city 200,000 people. It also had a vibrant middle class, its Public School system was a model for the nation and that was due in large part to the strength of its labor unions and the large number of manufacturing workers living in flint.
