My Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition review warmly applauded the revival of a game I d been playing for the last 20 years, and since its (second) release, the game has only grown in terms of the player base and overall popularity. Now, about a year and a couple of months after the Definitive Edition s release, the triple-team development squad including Forgotten Empires, Tantalus Media, and Wicked Witch have delivered a Lords of the West paid expansion pack.
It brings two completely new civilizations complete with new unique units, techs, and architecture, as well as three new campaigns full of content. I ve been playing through the campaigns and testing the new civs since the release of the expansion to see how well they fit in with the established meta, as well as whether or not the new content is worth the rather reasonable $10 price tag.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings just keeps growing, and growing, and growing. Its latest expansion, decades after the game was originally released in 1999, is called
Lords of the West and adds three more campaigns and two completely new civilisations: Burgundians and Sicilians.

The new civilisations coming in the Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition’s Lords of the West expansion are already raising eyebrows, and they’re not even out yet. Whether you feel they’re ‘OP’, or exactly what the game needs, the developers seem to be in the mood to keep things fresh for one of RTS games’ most passionate communities.
“Something we learned from previous civilisation is that people like bonuses that shake things up,” said Bert Beeckman, co-founder and lead designer at Forgotten Empires.
In case you weren’t aware, the new civs are pretty stupendous. The Burgundians have a unique cavalry unit called the Coustillier that can charge its’ attack stat for devastating early hits, making them excellent shock troops.
