Forsyth commissioner accused of stealing NAACP grant money

Arnita Miles, community activist and former Winston-Salem police officer, accused Tonya McDaniel, a Forsyth County commissioner, of misappropriating about $47,000 in grant money meant for the Winston-Salem NAACP and pocketing

Forsyth County set to hire new jail health providers

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is likely on Thursday to pick a different company to manage health care at the county jail, more than a year after the death of John Neville brought medical treatment at the jail into sharp focus here. And commissioners are also likely to spend extra money providing expanded mental health services at the jail, in response to concerns expressed by many, including Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough, that mental health treatment is something many people need who end up in jail. Wellpath, the current provider, was among six companies that submitted proposals to the county for the new contract, which will take effect on Sept. 1.

Quarry company runs into a wall of opposition to expansion plan for Winston-Salem facility

Vulcan Materials Company officials who logged onto their laptops last Tuesday to discuss a company rezoning request no doubt knew they could be walking into a (virtual) lion’s den. But they had no idea they’d be on the menu. And maybe, just maybe, having a bite taken out of their backside might have caused some rethinking by week’s end. The company, which has operated a rock quarry off N.C. 8/Germanton Road since 1959, had formally requested rumored rezoning for a 78-acre parcel it owns nearby to build a holding facility to store sand and rock byproducts produced during blasting.

What is the next step after city s discrimination apology?

Forsyth County Commissioner Don Martin, a Republican, says he can’t see voting in favor of a resolution apologizing for past discrimination of Black people, nor supporting the concept of reparations. Democratic County Commissioner Fleming El-Amin likes the idea, and thinks one form reparations could take locally might be support for scholarships to Forsyth Technical Community College or Winston-Salem State University. Both commissioners talked about the topic in the wake of last week’s passage by the Winston-Salem City Council of a resolution apologizing for the city’s role in discrimination against Black people. The idea has not come before the county board of commissioners, but if it does, Martin and El-Amin still might find some mutual ground despite the distance between their positions: Martin said he can support helping people who are disadvantaged with educational needs.
