What is that smell? That d be the penguins. There s one nesting under the toilet block, another under the hut, and several dozen have their private homes - complete with their names painted above the door - up the valley above the farmhouse.
At Flea Bay/Pōhatu, on the Banks Peninsula, you ll find the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand. And you re most welcome to visit - if you fancy the 11km walk to get here.

This map shows the two marine reserves in Canterbury, with the purple section highlighting the Akaroa harbour. We ve always taken a pretty hard line, but what we’ve got this year is this additional tool in our toolbox, MacTavish said. DOC has also upgraded the signage at Akaroa’s main boat ramp to be more succinct. Four new triangular yellow warning signs, about 3m wide and high, have been lowered onto the cliffs above where the reserves are located. There is also an app, Marine Mate, which shows the marine reserves on a map.

Since September, DOC warranted officers have been able to hand out fines for those found breaking conservation rules like fishing in marine reserves. DOC.
