mississippi. it was on the ground so long. it was on the daylight hours and a lot of people saw it and were able to get out of the way. 50 injuries and that total continues to go up. many homes and businesses destroyed. this was that track of that super cell thunderstorm. started on the border of mississippi, louisiana, trickled all across southern mississippi and alabama. on top of that, now we ve had more thunderstorms over that region. we ve had flash flooding problems throughout the area. we continue into montgomery with those storms. not so concerned about the tornadoes anymore, but flash flooding will be an issue. new england, we have a little storm system heading our way today. it s already beginning to be freezing rain and snow in areas of new jersey, hudson valley and spreading into connecticut. we have freezing rain and winter weather advisories. there will only be a little bit of ice and snow but we re very cold from boston, man chester,
here in washington. also the reverend al sharpton, and coming up next, we ve got the politico playbook. but first, let s go to bill karins. he s got a check on the forecast. and my goodness, bill, it feels like spring. i know. yesterday was so great, joe. we want a repeat of it this weekend. it is cooling off a bit, though. we will be back in the 70s probably sooner rather than later, but yesterday was incredible. d.c. was 74 degrees. boston, record high of 68, new york city hit 70 for the first time this early spring season. as we take you through the forecast. today is cooler, rain showers overnight that are leaving the area. watch out for light snow later today in the adirondacks through new england. also, heavy rain over the upcoming weekend. texas, louisiana, especially, and eventually that ll head northward. so the forecast is definitely wet in texas and that s where we should have flash flooding problems by sunday. the east coast is looking chilly, but beautiful and sunny. you
some folks and sent a couple dogs under the bed. this line will move through jackson, mississippi, over the next hour or two. flash flooding. this is the big story. the tornadoes are bad. the flooding will be with us for probably a week or so. flash flooding with thunderstorms south of little rock in northern mississippi and this area hasn t even rained in six hours. we still have flash flooding problems in illinois. right on the border of illinois and missouri. now, today the severe weather outbreak is likely in this area of red. once again we ll target poor arkansas, who s been hit so hard the last couple of days. eventually those storms will travel to memphis. this will be late, afternoon ov an overnight event late tonight through overnight hours. late tomorrow morning i ll probably be talking about tornadoes in the ground and very active weather that s going to be a rare overnight tornado event. by the time we get to wednesday, all that severe weather shifts into areas of tenness
for cairns 98. the potential for flooding but the rain coming down so hard and seeing the second part of the story, the rivers rising tomorrow and that means people need to be particularly watching out for the potential of flash flooding problems for friday, as we. monita, we ll talk more about weather and the winter storm that is winding down across parts of the u.s. coming up in a short while. okay, jen, thank you. we want to talk now to a man that witnessed the whole event, local weather watcher carl butcher. we are able to connect with him on skype. hi there, good to talk to you. what was it like? incredible. here in cairns, we didn t get too much of the intense storm that went a bit further south but it was still a very, very incredible experience, that s for sure. were you scared? i mean, not really.
california. some up in the san francisco bay area. others down here in southern california. the real threat during the seven-day event hasn t been mudslides which everyone fierce when we get so much rain. the real problem is the flooding. the national weather service says six to 13 inches of rain has fallen in the last seven days since we ve been pummeled by this storm. in some cases we received several inches an hour which created some major flash flooding problems. let s get to the video now down in san diego where they really received a lot of rain yesterday, creating flash flooding where a hotel had to be evacuated. about 50 guests had to be rescued by lifeguards in swift-water rescue teams at the premier inn. people are holding onto their belongings in the rafts as two to three feet of water rushed into that hotel, trapping people. listen. some of those guests had some medical issues. one woman was pregnant. another woman had cardiac issues.
