taxes, especially at the top. now donald trump has come along and said these hedge fund guys, they don t pay nearly enough tax, it s outrageous. they need to pay more tax, i want to cut tax to the middle class so it s this weird thing where you have this elite intellectual movement pushing the republican party in this direction. the first major candidate who has come out and said these things is donald trump, who is not at all in line with them tonally or necessarily in line with them about the specific policy solutions they would do. so when i talk with a lot of them, they said yeah, he s hitting a lot of the right messaging in terms of what the republican party needs to focus on. but higher tariffs on imports and really negative messaging about immigrants is not the right way to go about it. so what they are saying to me is, trump isn t the candidate we re looking for. but he s bringing out a lot of the messages we re looking to have out, and we re hoping that somebody who is more se
jeremy davis had an intrig intriguing sneak peek of the times story coming this weekend looking into the trump coalition. we re going to see there that trump coalition looks very similar to how a cruz one might look. very conservative. very anti-establishment. so cruz is saying i m going to be the last conservative standing. when trump flares out and nobody knows how that s going to happen and commentary and press is all filled this morning with speculation about how that s going to happen, nobody knows. but when trump flames out, cruz wants to be ready. so he is in iowa and in southern states being very methodical about building endorsements with grassroots activists, putting some on staff. in iowa, he ll have a pastor in each of the 99 counties to run a faith based coalition. so whatever happens to the donald, cruz will be one of the final candidates left to deal with it. you know, it s interesting. that s what you should do.
the hour. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a raging fire that broke out at the five-star cosmopolitan hotel in las vegas. it engulfed the pool deck. thick smoke on the vegas strip there. the hotel was evacuated. the firefighters put the flames out. next door in california, northern california, a wildfire threatening hundreds of homes there. this is nevada county. about 45 minutes northeast of sacramento. officials say the fire is moving very quickly. 4,000 acres have now gone up in smoke. the blaze is in a rugged area. fire trucks can t reach them. so, crews are being dropped off. some have to walk to the fire. a diver has died after being attacked by a shark in front of his daughter.
calling for trump to drop out. also trump was on bill o reilly tonight, and bill asked him what would he say directly to mccain. how did he respond? you know trump didn t apologize. he was given an opportunity to go as o reilly put it man-to-man, talk to senator mccain what would you say. and he sort of said something about whether if there was a misunderstanding maybe and went on and on. but then went back to his point about how john mccain had insulted all of his supports so if anybody was expecting a direct apology from donald trump to john mccain? they didn t get it. and i think in response to the des moines register tonight, you know why trump is number two in iowa so far, and i think what trump will probably say is that s the media talking to itself right? it s an editorial that doesn t matter, and he ll, you know he ll push ahead as the protest
everyone talks about how donald trump is playing by his open rules, he s not beholden to some establishment playbook. but aren t there third rails in politics and one of them maybe, isn t it questioning the heroism of a guy like john mccain in. yeah without a doubt that is the issue that prompted all his republican rivals to kind of finally step forward and condemn him. i think it s fair to ask that why except for cruz i should say. cruz s strategy seems to be, he want to be trump voters second choice when trump inevitably flames out. who knows if that will happen. cruz praised mccain, but he did not condemn trump. that is how he sliced this. but going after john i come after this interview in john mccain s office, and one of the things he did after the interview is he gave me a little tour showed me the picture of
