Not quite traditional college housing nor traditional multifamily, Flagship Kerns is bringing a big-city apartment trend to Knoxville: co-living.
The apartment complex, located just over the Tennessee River from downtown, is part of the overhaul of South Knoxville s 16-acre historic Kern s Bakery property on Chapman Highway.
So what is co-living, also known as communal living? Think of it as a shared living space with shared amenities but private, individual suites. No shared bathrooms here.
Mallory & Evans, a developer based in Atlanta, opened the 160-unit Flagship Kerns in early January. It s the first of three phases of development at the Kern s Bakery campus, which will eventually include a food hall with restaurants and retail, coworking spaces and a hotel.
