Lockerbie bombing: Megrahi s posthumous appeal rejected by Scottish judges

Lockerbie bombing: Megrahi s posthumous appeal rejected by Scottish judges Five Scottish judges have upheld the 2001 verdict against Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, the only person convicted for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people. Last week s decision is the second time an appeal on Megrahi s behalf has been rejected by the courts amid the continued suppression of contradictory evidence. In 2002, an initial appeal was thrown out. In 2009, Megrahi, already terminally ill, was tacitly offered release from Greenock prison on compassionate grounds if a contemporary appeal was dropped as part of rapprochement between the Libyan and British governments. The most recent appeal was launched by Megrahi s son, Ali Al-Megrahi, to clear his father s name posthumously.

Five arts venues we can t wait to revisit after lockdown

Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries THE last 12 months have been brutal for arts venues in Scotland and throughout the UK. Theatres, music venues and cinemas have gone dark, galleries have opened when allowed, only to find that for the most part only locals could visit. The absence of live entertainment has hit hard. But so has the absence of art and cinema, particularly outside the cities where they are often the heart and soul of their communities. As we continue to hunker down during the current lockdown we’ve been thinking of the venues we can’t wait to revisit later this year.

Spotlight: Are we any closer to the truth behind Lockerbie?

With US Attorney General Bill Barr seeking the extradition of a suspected bombmaker from Libya, we take a look at the search for answers behind an international tragedy They were going home to a Christmas they would never see. Just 38 minutes after the plane had taken off, as it prepared to wheel to port and head out over the Atlantic, an explosion ripped through a forward hold of the Boeing 747. It was two minutes and 50 seconds past 7pm on the evening of December 21, 1988. A recovered voice recorder would reveal a 180-millisecond hissing noise before Pan Am 103’s communications centre was destroyed.
