FITCHBURG, Wis. — Fitchburg fire officials said Thursday that a lack of automatic sprinklers — and a potential lack of functional smoke alarms — may have contributed to a man’s death in an apartment fire earlier this week. Crews responded to the fire at an apartment complex at 2118 Red Arrow Trail around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday and were quickly able.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating after the Fitchburg Fire Department says an apartment building that caught fire late Tuesday night did not have an automatic sprinkler system in place.
The Fitchburg Fire Department responded to reports of smoke and fire at 65 Carriageway Drive, a three-story garden-style apartment building just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
