January 19, 2021 Child care centers are tasked with meeting several critical needs. Not only are they preschools with the aim of preparing kids for kindergarten, both academically and socially, but they also are the only way many parents are able to hold a job. The COVID-19 pandemic made meeting those needs that much harder, and its impact lingers in the operating costs of these small businesses almost a year later. A Louisiana Policy Institute for Children survey of providers in June found that these businesses had lost on average $110,000 per center, translating to an estimated $137.5 million in collective losses statewide. The Institute is currently collecting data from a new survey, and Executive Director Libbie Sonnier said it could reveal more losses.
