Hartville council OKs cost-of-living hike for village employees

Highlights of Hartville Village Council meeting of June 1:
KEY ACTION – Approved a 1.8% salary increase for all village employees, based upon the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Cost Index.
DISCUSSION – Councilwoman Bev Green asked Fiscal Officer Scott Varney for details on the proposed salary increase. “(The ECI-based salary adjustment) is something we have been doing (and) it is in our financial plan,” Varney said. Green said council should “hold off” on approving the increase until the personnel committee has completed its salary survey of 12 neighboring communities in order to assess Hartville Village employees’ current salary and benefits package. Hartville Village expected to receive $600,000 in additional COVID-19 aid

KEY ACTION: Established a Coronavirus Aid Fiscal Recovery Fund for forthcoming federal COVID-19 relief funds.
DISCUSSION: Councilwoman Bev Green asked Fiscal Officer Scott Varney for an explanation of why the fund was being established.
“The Recovery Act passed a month ago by the president and Congress will bring continued funding in response to the coronavirus,” Varney said. “Since it is federal money, I need a special account to receive this money.” Varney said it has been estimated that the village will receive $600,000 and he expects the funds to be available within a month.
