Orphaned baby orca in Wellington moved into pool before sea gets rough
A baby orca separated from its pod was lifted into a portable pool overnight, to protect it from rough seas during a storm.
The orphan calf, named Toa, was found stranded at Plimmerton beach in Wellington on Sunday afternoon.
The pool can hold 32,000 thousand litres of seawater and will protect the young whale from the swells expected today.
While searches continue for his pod, he is being fed and cared for.
Department of Conservation marine species manager Ian Angus said Toa was relocated last night as a precaution and as a temporary measure while we wait for this weather bomb to go past .
