‘I urge everyone to help the fishermen by eating their fish’, Cllr Rufus Gilbert, the Conservative responsible for the economy at Devon County Council, told its Cabinet recently.
Well I went down to Seaton’s excellent fishmongers and stocked up the freezer for a fortnight. But somehow I don’t think that ‘Eat Devon’s fish’ is going to save the fishing industry, which, to put it simply, has been Brexited.

McAnea wins in Unison Submitted by AWL on 12 January, 2021 - 10:21
Christina McAnea has been elected as the new general secretary of Unison the first woman to head the UK’s largest union. McAnea is viewed as the continuity candidate following Dave Prentis, who is retiring after 20 years as general secretary. She takes up her post on 22 January.
The full results were: Christina McAnea 63,900 (47.7%); Paul Holmes 45,220 (33.76%); Roger McKenzie 14,450 (10.79%); Hugo Pierre 10,382 (7.75%).
McAnea secured less than 50% of the vote in the First Past The Post election. The combined vote of the three other candidates (all of whom stood against McAnea from the left) could have beaten her.

Campaigners in Wanstead took to the streets to demand a change to the voting system so that every vote counts.
On Saturday, December 12 Wanstead Make Votes Matter supporters joined a nationwide day of action and came together to send Christmas cards to their MP demanding equal votes.
Members of the group, part of the UK cross-party movement advocating to change the First Past The Post voting system to Proportional Representation, posted their Christmas cards one year since the 2019 general election where they say seven out of 10 votes cast by the UK population didn’t matter.
