LAFAYETTE, Ind. First Friday Lafayette, an evolution of Tippecanoe Arts Federation s Gallery Walk events, kicked off Friday night for the first time.
For May s event, over 30 businesses and artists participated, according to Tetia Lee, Tippecanoe Arts Federation executive director. Honestly, after COVID, folks have really turned to the arts for comfort and healing, Lee said. And this is a great way that we thought we could merge between economic development and arts and cultural sector.
The City of Lafayette and Duke Energy sponsored the first event, according to Lee.
Along with art galleries hosting their opening receptions on First Fridays, Lee said many downtown businesses have extended their evening hours, and restaurants are featuring specials for the events.
The Long Center, in downtown Lafayette, announced a kick off event for its 100th anniversary.
Banners celebrating the milestone were placed Wednesday on the historic Mars Theatre, now known as the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
The Mars Theatre, according to John Hughey, executive director of the center, opened April 19, 1921.
The anniversary event will be 1:30 p.m., Monday at the theater, located at 111 N 6th St.
Greater Lafayette Commerce will serve as host of Monday s event, which will include comments from elected officials and a concert announcement by theater staff.
The public is welcome to attend. Face coverings are required and social distancing protocols will be followed. A virtual livestream will be available at facebook.com/glcommerce.
