New Haven police unveil approach to help stop gun violence

The deadly shooting happened on Sherman Parkway near Munson Street around 8:30 p.m. A person was killed in a shooting on Sherman Parkway in New Haven the evening of May 26. WFSB Police only identified the victim as a 34-year-old man from West Haven. A 28-year-old New Haven man remained at the scene and identified himself as being involved in the shooting, police said. This is the city s 13th homicide of the year, and the fourth in just the past 12 days. One person has died following a shooting that happened Wednesday night. In recent neighborhood canvasses across the city following a number of shootings, the chief and her officers said the one thing they hear from residents is the desire for more officers on the street.

When you think about public monuments in the American South, you probably think of the Civil War, controversy around statues, and almost certainly of white men. But Richland County has a different history that, while not hidden, is not as well known as the monuments you might be thinking of. According to one researcher, the Midlands county has the most public memorials to Black women of any county in the United States. Richland County has 17 monuments to Black women nine historical markers, three historic sites and at least five street names.
