24-hour supervision. the thing that is important to understand about the disorder is that they are not without feeling. so when they are exposed to the stimulous like a hot plate, they are feeling something, but they don t have the natural recoil. reporter: present from birth, congenital insensitive to pain with and high troe sis or cipa preventing firing signals to the brain. this is so rare that the prevalence is unknown. to put it in perspective in a year of my clinic, i might come to the diagnosis in only one in a total year. and so, you know, that is pretty rare. reporter: until 2006, little was known about cipa and doctors didn t know how the test for it. when we tested for it, we didn t find any abnormalities and we knew that we had something different as did our colleagues throughout the world seeing these very rare patients. reporter: later in the year, the research team in the
