to drive this idea. the fact that maria democrats will say this is some bad act that donald trump thought about firing mr. mueller, give me a break. this is a massive rip on the part of the democratic party. donald trump didn t collude and they will stretch and contort any news that drives the narrative away from a booming economy, wages going up, bonuses coming out, businesses coming back to america, a secure border, they can t handle that narrative so they ll grab that straw and report on donald trump thought about firing bob mueller, who cares? it s a nonstory. that s all they have to go on. martha: will revisit this again. marie, thank you very much. congress matt duffy, thank you as well. good to see you both. still ahead tonight, one of the president s top priorities is putting an end to the opioid crisis in america, but one former democratic member of his commission on this says it is not working. patrick kennedy joins me live
obstructed justice. after receiving the president s order to fire mr. mueller, the white house counsel, donald mcghan refused to ask the justice department to dismiss the special counsel, saying he would quit instead. mr. mcghan disagreed with the case. he also told white house officials that firing mr. mueller would have a catastrophic effect on mr. trump s presidency and would incite more questions about whether the white house was trying to obstruct the russia investigation. mr. mcghan also told white house officials that mr. trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own. the president then backed off. we want to remind you now of what the president said when he was asked about mueller back in august. mr. president, have you thought about, considered leading the dismissal of the special counsel? is there anything bob mueller could do that would send you in that direction? i haven t thought anything
say, to be fair. an argument that there is a pattern of secrecy and two trumps emerging. and that is bad. and understanding when other people shouldn t be watching what he s doing. let me read something from the new york times story. mr. mcgahn disagreed with the president s case and says firing mr. mueller would have a catastrophic effect on mr. trump s president. mr. mcgahn also told white house officials that mr. trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own. the president then backed off. you wonder if maybe devin nunes, let s say, trey gowdy, should pay attention here. does it seem that for trump to do this he needs an accomplice to push him in that direction? that s sort of the message that we re getting from this. yeah, i would imagine. and what would the republican reaction to this be on the hill? i m not sure today. again, in july, we had a cascade of quotes on the record and off the record saying this would be a very bad move, put us in a very bad position.
trump lawyer team. look, i m going to be interested in interviewing the president and that shouldn t be shocking to anybody that the special counsel wants to question the person who headed up the campaign, the transition team and ultimately the oval office that is the center of the probe. however, what is new and interesting since is that in the last week or two, we understand the special counsel has made clear to the legal team the topics he wants to probe and question the president about. and because those are squarely in the area of the president s own actions, your firing mr. president of michael flynn or pushing him out of office and your firing in may of 2017 the fbi director james comey. we know this is a probe very much focused on the president s actions, decisions and also,
knowledge of the meeting. before firing mr. comey, the president spent a weekend working on a letter the president intended to send to mr. comey, the letter was never sent. the special prosecutor has obtained a copy of that letter. the tikts reporting tonight that the first sentence of that letter said that the russia investigation had been, quote, fabricated and politically motivated. after the president fired james comey, the new york times reported that the president had asked james comey to shut down the fbi investigation of michael flynn in the day after the times reported that deputy attorney general rod rosenstein acting in the place of recused attorney general jeff sessions announced the appointment of robert mueller as special prosecutor. according to the times, quote, mr. trump erupted at mr. sessions upon hearing the news in an oval office meeting. the president said the attorney
