Alberta’s government has declared an early start to the 2024 wildfire season, 10 days earlier than usual, and is encouraging Albertans to proactively prepare.
Several wildfires still burning from 2023 are smouldering in peat moss, sometimes deep underground, and the snow overtop is insulating instead of extinguishing it.
The FireSmart neighbourhood recognition program is a Canada-wide initiative that acknowledges communities that have taken proactive measures to minimize the risks of a wildfire.
