My Ride: This Firebird had the right formula to whet his appetite

BY BUD WILKINSON | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN There once was a time when car shoppers could go to a dealership and order a new model from the manufacturer in the color and with the specific options that they desired. Paul Gerbi of Torrington did just that in 1976 at a Pontiac dealer in Thomaston. He then waited, and waited, and waited some more for the car to be built and delivered. “I bought it in like September and it came in two days before Christmas,” Gerbi recalled earlier this week as he stood in front of the car that he has owned for nearly 45 years. “They told me like eight weeks and it turned out, I think, to be 11 or 12. I was going crazy, yeah.”

1974 Pontiac Firebird Formula Is the Last Muscle Car, Rocks 500 HP Built 455

1974 Pontiac Firebird Formula Is the Last Muscle Car, Rocks 500-HP Built 455 28 Feb 2021, 19:28 UTC · by Check out the 1974 Pontiac Firebird that Vanguard Motor Sales just put up for sale. It costs $64,900, which is a lot of money for a muscle car from that era. Still, we think it s one of the few that deserves it, partly because of its condition and the retro-looking yet fully built 455 V8 under the hood. 38 photos The look of the car is not the norm for a Pontiac muscle car from that time. There s no fire chicken on the hood, and the paint is dark blue instead of black. Orange decals decorate the exterior and carry over to the orange piping on the leather seats and carpets. Even though the cabin looks stock, it s been upgraded with better dials.

Studebaker National Museum drives into the Disco Decade

Although Studebaker stopped making cars altogether in 1966, the Studebaker National Museum finds that the following “disco decade” of the ’70s has an important story to tell. “White vinyl tops and white leather interiors (are some things) you don’t see anymore,” Studebaker National Museum Archivist Andrew Beckman says. “Cars actually came in colors that weren’t black, white or silver once upon a time.” The exhibit includes a 1972 Lincoln Continental MK IV, a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville Convertible, a 1973 Ford Mustang, a 1974 Pontiac Firebird Formula 455, a 1975 SV-1, a 1976 AMC Pacer and a 1977 Ford Mustang II Ghia. With the shift away from monochromatic colors came a decrease in the size of cars as well.
