MIDVALE The cooperative efforts of two fire departments resulted in a family of four being rescued from Moose Island after their kayaks capsized in the Tuscarawas River on Sunday afternoon.
Dennison Fire Chief David McConnell said his department was notified at 1:42 p.m. that the family s boats had overturned north of Moose Island.
He asked the Warwick Township Volunteer Fire Department to launch two boats, one at the village of Tuscarawas and the other at New Philadelphia.
McConnell said firefighters found the family on the island. They got them onto land outside the river by 2:50 p.m.

MIDVALE Village Council is weighing offers from Uhichsville, Dennison and a private ambulance company to provide fire response and emergency medical service. The fire service would replace the Midvale Fire Department, which has struggled to maintain staffing in recent years.
Village officials heard from representatives of all three entities at Thursday s council meeting, but did not make a choice. They discussed contract negotiations in an executive session that was closed to the public. Council s safety and finance committee is expected to meet to discuss the proposals before the full council holds its next regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the pavilion in Midvale Community Park, according to Fiscal Officer Georgianne Turner.
