There are rising safety concerns over an increase in calls for fires in wooded areas in the city.
Moncton’s Fire Chief Conrad Landry says their department has seen an increase in the number of calls to makeshift camps in the community. Some of the the results of individuals who have built fires to keep themselves warm
“I’m not talking about backyard fires to make marshmallows If it’s dry season, it can start a forest fire, or someone can get hurt. Or if there is combustibles or propane tanks around, there can be issues. Carbon monoxide is also a problem if they have it in their tents or their encampment,” Landry says.
Moncton creating uniformed community officers to patrol city, enforce bylaws
The City of Moncton, N.B., is creating a uniformed force of what it calls community officers to patrol the city and enforce municipal bylaws beginning later this year.

In his last update on COVID-19 in 2020, Moncton’s incident commander of emergency measures said we should all be proud as a city and as a province of how we flattened the curve of the pandemic.
Compared to other jurisdictions, Fire Chief Conrad Landry noted how we’ve been a success story.
While we’re all tired of the pandemic and want to be at the Green level of recovery, Landry said we can’t get discouraged just yet.
“As much as the first vaccines have been delivered, we still have a significant road ahead of us.”
