Bowdoin College experiment looks to test relationship between oysters and seagrass Students and staff hypothesize that the seagrass will help the growth of oysters, which could have a positive impact of Maine s booming aquaculture industry. C. Thacher Carter / The Times Record An experiment being conducted by Bowdoin College students and faculty will test if there is a positive relationship between oyster growth and seagrass meadows – a finding that, if true, could potentially aid the state’s booming aquaculture industry. The month-long experiment is taking place at Bowdoin College’s Schiller Coastal Studies Center on Orr’s Island and uses seven-gallon buckets containing oysters that are filled with water varying in temperature, acidity and seagrass quantity. The project also has a field component, where oysters were placed in a nearby cove in different locations relative to seagrass meadows.

Get your kicks: The best sustainable sneaker brands you need to know about

The French brand, founded in 2004, is known for its sneakers made with certified organic cotton, wild Amazonian rubber, banana oil, sugar cane, recycled plastic, and rice and corn waste. While one in three styles is vegan, Veja also uses leather that is chrome-free and from audited tanneries. (Harvesting and tanning leather has a high environmental and ethical impact, so Veja and other brands are looking more to plant- based alternatives.) The shoes are made in Brazil, with employees paid more than the living wage, and materials are sourced directly from producers (mostly in Peru and Brazil) at rates not tied to the market price. (The brand pays roughly double the market price for their organic cotton.)

Are you slowly killing yourself while you sit at your desk or can you relax in your seat a little longer? The claim that sitting is the new smoking has been widely circulated since 2013, when Dr Anup Kanodia was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article. However, while sitting too much is definitely bad for you, this exact statement has since been disproved. Even so, the claim continues to stick around – mostly because it’s alarmist and catchy – but also because there is some truth to the matter.
