10 Mandela Effects From the History of Movies In 2009, paranormal researcher Fiona Broome was sitting in a green room at a science fiction and fantasy convention when a conversation began about South African politician Nelson Mandela. Several people in the room were absolutely convinced that Mandela had died in prison many years earlier. They even remembered his funeral. In fact, Mandela was still alive; he was actually released from prison in 1990 and went on to become South Africa’s president. He didn’t pass away until 2013.
