Berecz and Cardona retain Finn European titles in Vilamoura

By Daniel Smith Zsombor Berecz retains his Finn European title © João Costa Ferreira Zsombor Berecz has successfully retained the Finn European Championship after a consistent, confident and conclusive display on the waters of Vilamoura, Portugal, over the past week. The Hungarian never put a foot wrong and achieved a level of consistency unmatched by the fleet and then put the pedal to the metal when it mattered to win with a race to spare. Giles Scott s return to Finn sailing after six months off with the INEOS Team UK America s Cup team was also a triumph. A shaky start for the Brit was followed by a few classic Scott moments but he did just enough to fend off the massive challenge from the ever-confident young sailors knocking on his transom.

Berecz wins Finn European title with a race to spare in Vilamoura

Berecz wins Finn European title with a race to spare in Vilamoura Friday, 16 April 2021 Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz completed a hugely impressive week of sailing today to earn gold at the Finn European Open and Under-23 Championship in Vilamoura. Having won both races on the penultimate day to extend his lead to 11 points, Berecz made no mistake in finishing off the job. Fifth place in the first of today’s races was sufficient to give him the title, as his previous results had been so consistently good that he didn’t need to contest the tenth and final one. The 34-year-old, who won the Tokyo 2020 test event in the Finn class in 2019, finished with a net total of 47 points.
