reached into the 40s now. certainly from the images we ve seen, the stories we re absorbing, expectations it will go higher seem almost inevitable at this point. reporter: as cal and i have noticed by the way, we ve seen several bodies that have been pulled and placed on trucks. that hasn t increased the death count. we re in an isolated place where there does not seem to be a whole lot of presence of authority. there seem to be aid agencies working here and ngos. i think the process of finding bodies, identifying them, registering them and increasing the death toll is probably not a particularly efficient one. i would hasten to say, we have no way of knowing what a count looks like. but it s not in the 40s. again, within an hour of landing, we had at least six bodies loaded onto trucks. yeah. there s a lot here. we re not in a stage where things have been cleared. wherever you look on this island i m just going to ask our photographer to pan to the left there so you can se
came into freeport and grand bahama and then it receded. what it brought and left we can see. what it took away, we may never know. joining me now from the bahamas, nbc news international correspondent cal perry. i know you ve been walking these ruins. really it seems like a graveyard. what s it like? reporter: that s the best description for it as we work these neighborhoods and walk them, we see search and rescue teams and we can show you what they re finding they re finding bodies in the rubble. you can smell it as you move around the island, the smell is unmistakable. as the wind changes, these rescue teams know which direction to go in. one of the big concerns is this neighborhood called the mud. it s where a number of undocumented haitians were living. we talk a walk around it.
rebuilding or even cleaning. the only activity going on here is search and rescue. the destruction is so colossal that they are finding bodies in rubble and the whole island is full of rubble. i am not asking you to give an official number on the death toll. given how you just zridescribe things, those rescue officials pulling bodies and they would have pulled more if they were in a different situation. how much bigger do you think the number could get? has anyone told you? reporter: let me tell you, we went over to the mud and half a mile out, you can smell death. wh what does it mean? reporter: obvious piece of rubble. i have not experienced much in my life. i reported on a lot of stories but there are a few times in my
death toll now is over 1,400. reporter: the aid operation finally appears to be growing here, days and days after this earthquake happened. the government response does appear to be increasing. more planes are landing and they are taking people who need to be evacuated out. ships have arrived bringing aid. more rescue equipment has been brought to this part to help with operations like behind me here where people could still be trapped even alive five days on after this earthquake happened. however, there still remains a ton of frustration with the government. you talk to people in these camps that have been set up for people homeless after this event and they will tell you they are frustrated by a lack of drinking water, less tris electricity, f. as for the death toll, it continues to go up. and the reason for that is they keep finding bodies in places where it has been difficult to look. we saw that first-hand today in
