By the start of fiscal 2025, the MBTA is "going to need more money" beyond what the Massachusetts Legislature Hill already appropriated to continue addressing the agency's safety problems, said the T's chief financial officer. That same year, the last batch of pandemic-era federal aid will be exhausted, leaving the agency to tackle balancing its budget.
MBTA officials warned of a “sobering” financial outlook for the agency but voted Thursday to jack up spending by nearly 7 percent in a $2.72 billion annual.
Next year’s budget comes in at about 7%, or $174 million higher than this fiscal year and the spending plan calls for growing the T’s workforce from 6,679 employees to 7,743, an addition of 964 employees not included in fiscal 2023’s budget.
