Yorgen Fenech s cut-price property plan with senior police officer

Plans for a suspicious property deal involving former police superintendent Ray Aquilina, construction tycoon Joe Portelli, and murder suspect Yorgen Fenech are being investigated by the police.  Officers from the police’s anti-money laundering unit believe that a Birżebbuġa apartment worth in excess of €180,000 was set to be sold to Aquilina’s parents for around a third of its market value by Fenech in 2018.  The plan being investigated by police, was for the property to change hands for some €60,000. Sources said the apartment was then to be donated to Aquilina by his parents in what police suspect may be a case of bribery and money laundering.

Bezzina is expected to face criminal proceedings over works carried out by public sector employees under his purview, on the Żurrieq PN club in 2012.

Opposition MP Toni Bezzina is being interrogated by police over alleged corruption dating back to 2012.  Bezzina, the Nationalist Party transportation shadow minister, arrived at the Financial Crime Investigation Department shortly after 2pm on Monday accompanied by his lawyer Joe Giglio. It is understood that the investigation relates to claims Bezzina used government workers to do works on a PN club in his constituency of Zurrieq back in 2012.  The matter, which allegedly occurred in the run up to the local council elections, had been reported in newspapers Kullħadd and L-Orizzont.  In 2016, Bezzina lost a libel case he had filed over the newspaper reports but won an appeal of that decision one year later.

Tax chief Marvin Gaerty told he is no longer on police bail

The police have revoked bail granted last December to tax chief Marvin Gaerty, following his interrogation over chats with murder suspect Yorgen Fenech. Gaerty’s lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia confirmed when contacted on Saturday that their client had been called by the Financial Crime Investigation Department and told there was no need to report at their offices for an appointment he had been given for Monday.  They confirmed that Gaerty, who has continued to perform his role of tax chief, was told that he was no longer on police bail although investigations were continuing.   The Inland Revenue Commissioner had been questioned by police on December 22 as part of an investigation into trading in influence involving the businessman who stands accused of conspiring to murder journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
