STUART Shearer Newton spent much of his life in public service overseas, mostly in Africa, and after retirement he was elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Winchester City Council, representing Micheldever and neighbouring villages. He was born in 1934 in South Shields, on Tyneside, and vividly remembered the bombing raids of World War Two. His two older brothers served in Kenya and Palestine, and their letters home widened his horizons. In 1955, he joined the Colonial Service and was posted to a Beau Geste fort in Wajir, in the desert of northern Kenya. His transportation was a camel, and his pet was a lion cub. The lion eventually became too much of a handful (and gave him a shoulder scar that lasted for life), and was sold to MGM, to feature in movies, and perhaps even as one of the famous roaring lions in the opening credits.
Barbara Ess, The Disappearance of the Mind/Body Problem (1988)
Barbara Ess, the boundary-pushing photographer and musician, died on Thursday, aged 73. Her death was confirmed by her gallery, Magenta Plains, though a cause has not yet been made public. As a photographer, Ess is most widely recognised for her large, emotive images made with a pinhole camera, one of the earliest methods of recreating an image that has been around for centuries. As a musician, Ess played a major role in the relatively short-lived but highly influential No Wave genre, a music marked by often a-tonal melodies and dramatic live performance, which emerged in New York City in the late 1970s.
Petrus Langenhoven Hydroponic crop production can complement traditional farming methods.
Kayla Sweatland | Dec 30, 2020
After losing all their vegetable crops to a 100-year-flood during the summer of 2008 in Indiana, traditional farm couple Darin and Deb Kelly decided to try a soil-less farming system known as hydroponics. Their first system was made from a plastic bin and a 400-watt lightbulb in their basement and could only hold six lettuce plants.
When the Kelly family first made their transition to hydroponic farming, they were still growing a small number of crops with traditional farming, proving that having a hydroponic system while still farming traditionally is manageable. The small system they developed in their basement made them fall in love with hydroponics, and their farm only grew from there.
