Were actually standing in front of a series of president ial limousines, which tell the story of the development of president ial transportation over the last 117 years or so. Right behind me is a 1902 carriage used by president theodore roosevelt. It becomes a force of the united states, starting in 91890, but by the time of roosevelts administration, its a common occurrence to see cars moving on public streets. She was born three miles east of here in the town of madison and she spent time in this area as well as in bucktown a few miles west of here. It was in this area of Dorchester County she learned the skills that were vital to make her a successful conductor of the underground railroad such as reading the landscape, reading the stars, foraging for food, walking outdoors and being comfortable by herself. This building is lined in cedar which is a reference to her time in the timber fields with her father. The last three buildings are lined in zinc and the idea is that over time it will patina and weather like copper and it will begin to fade and the idea is that after you visit our come through our Visitor Center your ignorance about Harriet Tubmans life and the underground railroad will fade as well
