Feb. 20 (UPI) Italy s President Sergio Mattarella and Pope France marked the one-year anniversary of the first Italian COVID-19 case by honoring health workers.
The first Italian COVID-19 case was identified in Lombardy on Feb. 20, 2020 in a 38-year-old man, a research article shows. Two tourists from China had tested positive in Rome on Jan. 30. A few days after the first Italian tested positive, additional cases popped up in the surrounding area, and soon other cases, mostly in the northern area. Areas in Lombardy and Veneto went into lockdown first and by March 8 lockdowns began nationwide.
(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 30 - The new Pfizer COVID vaccine arrived
in Italy on Wednesday.
Nine DHL planes brought the first 470,000 doses of the vaccine
to the airports of Milan Malpensa, Bergamo
Orio al Serio, Ancona Falconara, Bologna, Rome Ciampino, Naples,
Pisa, Venice and Bari.
Refrigerated vans will be escorted by police to deliver the
phials to 203 administration points in the various Italian
regions.
Meanwhile the UK gave the green light to the Oxford-AstraZeneca
vaccine, after the Pfizer-BioNTech one.
The vaccination campaign with the new vaccine is set to kick off
on January 4, while Italy s is expected to start a few days

ROME Italy is reclaiming a record that nobody wants the most coronavirus deaths in Europe after the health care system again failed to protect the elderly and government authorities delayed imposing new restrictions.
This wasn’t supposed to happen. Italy was the first country in the West to be slammed by COVID-19 and, after suffering a huge wave of death in spring, brought infections under control.
Italy then had the benefit of time and experience heading into the fall resurgence because it trailed Spain, France and Germany in recording big new clusters of infections. Yet the virus spread fast and wide, and Italy has added nearly 29,000 dead since Sept. 1.
