Fiji Rice Limited has fully utilised the $150k set aside for the Rice Rehabilitation Program for farmers in the Northern Division following the devastation caused by TC Yasa.
Fiji Rice chairman Raj Sharma said the funds paid for land preparation.
“I’m quite pleased to say the maximum amount of money given has been fully used, which means 2000 acres of land has been prepared,” Mr Sharma said.
“An additional 1000 acres of land has also been prepared, I’m told and I must thank the Hon. Minister for Agriculture and the Attorney General. This was decided over the phone in five minutes, thank you very much Minister,” he added.

Fiji Rice Limited today submitted their financial reports for the years 2013 to 2017 at their first Annual General Meeting after more than a decade.
Board Chair Raj Sharma says the audited accounts for the past years were not in order and they have spent the last few years putting it together.
Speaking to
FBC News after the meeting, Sharma says the financial report was the focus of the meeting which was held in Labasa this morning.

The report notes that the company continues to make profit despite substantial losses recorded in the years 2013 to 2015.
In 2013, the company recorded a loss of $268,000. In 2014, they recorded a loss of $311,000 and in 2015 – a loss of $318,000.

Jan 07, 2021 10:49:57 AM Sugarcane framers in the North whose farms were affected by storm surges during severe tropical cyclone Yasa have been encouraged to take up rice farming while waiting for their farms to recover in the next four months. Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy offered the suggestion during a recent meeting with the senior management of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). The meeting was mainly to discuss strategies that will assist farmers affected by the salt water intrusion in the low lying coastal areas. Most of the farms in low lying areas of Nagigi, Korovatu, Vunika, Wailevu and Tiri settlement of Tabucola had been affected.
